When Should a Marine Cylinder Liner Be Replaced?
A marine cylinder liner should be replaced when measured wear exceeds the engine maker's maximum limit (commonly expressed as a percentage of bore diameter), or when inspection reveals scuffing, cloverleaf wear, cracks, corrosion, excessive lubricating-oil consumption, or blow-by. Correct cylinder lubrication, clean fuel and scavenge air, honing within limits, and timely piston-ring renewal all help extend liner life. Regular measurement during overhauls provides the trend data needed to plan replacement before failure.
